FAQs | Soy Candles - Soy Wax Melts, Organic Soy Wax

What makes Charleston Candles Works candles special?

All candle made by Charleston Candle Works are 100% soy with no chemical additives or stabilizers and essential oils used for fragrance.

Why do my candles turn yellow or fade?

All our candles are made using natural products and contain no ultraviolet stabilizers. In bright sunlight or under florescent lights they can turn yellow or have the natural color of the wax fade. This does not change the scent or degrade the candle in any way.

Why do we make soy candles?

Soy candles are believed to be safer because they don’t have chemical byproducts released into the air when burned, unlike some paraffin candles that are made of petroleum based products.

Do soy wax candles have more scent?

Soy wax holds more scent than paraffin wax. Soy wax holds 10% per weight as compared to paraffin wax which holds 6% per weight.  This means our candles are more intense and will fill your home or office with long-lasting fragrance.

What is a wax pool?

A wax pool is the area of melted wax that forms while burning a candle.

What other benefits are there to soy wax?

Soy wax is a renewable resource. It is locally grown, all natural, and only limited by the amount we choose to grow. Paraffin candles are made from oil based products and prices are dictated by this.

How do I make my soy candles last longer?

Soy wax candles burn longer as long as wick trimmed appropriately to ¼ - ⅛ inch before each burning and candle is allowed to burn until the wax pool (melted wax) reaches the edge of the container.

How do I prevent my candle from tunnelling?

Tunnelling is when a candle “burns down the middle”, or more specifically, when the wax does not melt all the way to the edge. In order to prevent tunnelling, you should burn your candle for one hour per inch of container diameter when you first light it. For example if container is 3 inches in diameter then candle needs to burn 3 hours the first time. If not, the wax will never melt past the first wax pool and thereby cause tunnelling.

How do I maintain my wick?

Keep wicks trimmed each time you use candle to prevent mushrooming from the previous burning.

Why should I read candle labels?

Unless a candle specifically says 100% soy, it usually contains paraffin wax or other stabilizers. Labels stating that a candle is soy can be very misleading and may mean that the candle is actually a soy/paraffin blend.

How do I clean soy wax?

Soy wax is easier to clean because it washes away with soap and water. This allows you to reuse containers keeping them more eco-friendly.
